The most common way to get to Romania is by regular flights to Bucharest Henri Oanda International airport ( Code OTP) or to buy a local charter package during summer that brings you to the seaside port of Constanta. Or to go by any European lowcost air service that is growing rapidly also on Romania. Then you most likely arrive at the second international airport in Bucharest, BANEASA.

All destination airports are to be found on the web; like www.otp-airport.ro and http://www.mk-airport.ro/  There are also other international airports in cities like Timisoara, Iasi, Sibiu and Cluj. | Click airport codes in the frame to the right to see the websites | Vola.ro to the right on this page gives you the possibility to buy air tickets online for a good value.

Romanian air companies that may help are www.tarom.ro , www.blueair.ro and www.carpatair.ro, Some of these companies even fly to and from other Romanian cities like Timisoara, Cluj and Sibiu from special airports in Germany, Hungary, Italy, Holland and Spain - but timetables tend to alter often. The Hungarian company www.malev.hu has flights to Romania, so have www.klm.nl , www.lot.pl and www.ba.ro - and several others.

Finding cheap lowcost flight tickets on the Romanian web may cause some net searching, but www.bileteavion.ro is up and working and you may pay safely using your credit card. If you're in Romania already there are plenty of low fare travel agencies in all major cities. www.airtickets.ro is another web service, but charter packets from Romania tend to be the focus.

www.wizzair.com started flying to and from Romania at low costs from January 15th 2007. They have turned out to be very popular among Romanians and foreign visitors alike. www.easyjet.com also has Romania as a destination.

From April 2008 Ryanair fly PISA ITALY - CONSTANTA ROMANIA | www.ryanair.com - There is a Romanian web page that links all lowcost services from Romania on www.zborieftin.ro/en - Quite handy as the lowcost market changes rapidly. However, the total cost with a regular flight may not be that expensive either. CHECK

The main connection to Romania by rail is via Hungary. The German site www.dbahn.de has a brilliant survey of all timetables from Europe to Romania. However, train tickets are usually only sold in Budapest and Bucuresti/Romania, so you should include some time en route to buy tickets crossing the Hungarian - Romanian border. The travel agency www.waastelstravel.ro may help though as it as an agency at the Keleti Rail Station in Budapest and at the main station in Bucuresti. As for crossings from Serbia and Ukraine or the Rep. of Moldova you should apply well in advance to check the possibilities. Mainly tickets are sold at connecting stations only.

In addition to the European web site of DB, the American site www.raileurope.com is brilliant when it comes to booking possibilities and time information. However, prices listed are quite high compared to what you have to pay if you pay the tickets at the departure station. However, reservations are possible and good seats garanteed online. Romanian railways also have a brilliant site on www.infofer.ro in several languages. Prices and times are always updated, sometimes even more than the ladies selling tickets at the stations. There is no booking online possible that works well for foreigners.

It is simple and comfortable to travel by train in Romania, and trains are usually on time. Exceptions are when the rail tracks are renovated - which happens at several main lines at the time being.

Coach links are indicated on www.eurolines.ro  Private cars can cross several places from Hungary and Serbia, at some points from Moldova and Ukraine. Some restrictions apply at some crossing points when we talk about Moldova and Ukraine. Car directions can be obtained on this link

It is now not  expensive nor complicated to rent cars when in Romania. All major brands are present like www.avis.ro in addition to several more cheap local ones.

Getting around by public transport in Romania herself is mostly done by minibuses licenced to run routes criss-crossing the country. It's cheap and they run frequently and stations are mostly placed close to railway stations. One web site and timetables available - www.autogari.ro  Coaches are now mostly new and comfortable in Romania, though very crowded during summer or  general holidays.

WATER | Do not drink tapped water. Buy bottles. APA PLATA = without gas, APA MINERALA = water with gas
STRAY DOGS | Not dangerous really, but in some city a traffic problem. Stay clear of groups.
STRAY BEARS | In Brasov City stray bears may roam the streets at night. Do not feed them! Stay away. Also on roads in mountain areas.
NO SMOKING | No smoking in trains, at malls. Restrictions increase and fines - if caught - heavy.
FINES | If fined by police or someone who claim to be police, asked to be taken to the nearest station to pay. Be polite. Security guards or lifeguards on the beach have no right to issue fines.
TAXI | Always ask for the price ahead of a ride. In advance. Ask for the metre to be switched on. If any problems, make a scene. Write down the imatriculation number. Romanian taxi drivers may be the biggest hazzle you face on your travel, but young drivers seem to more respectful to the idea of decent service than those over 50 with a mentality from the communist times. And taxis close to the entrance of any main train station or airport surely tend to cheat more than those a few blocks away.
CHECK BILLS | Always check your bill - especially at restaurants.
BEGGING | Poor people beg especially outside railway stations and bus stations. Some are fake beggars. Some desperate. Neglect them and there is no problem. Handicapped persons may need a dime.
