Romania has plenty of new hotels, motels and renovated old hotels with a pleasant standard. Most two and three star hotels are far better than similar hotels in London for instance. And prices are low compared to Western Europa, but prices differ a lot. The location and the season decide the level of costs staying in a hotel of your choice. The most easy way is to book online and since becoming a EU member state Romania is like any other country using the net to make reservations, at least in the big cities. At the seaside though you may still find the best offers by just showing up in person at a small motel or hotel, - at times good value is also offered in hotels even close to the sea. Romanian hotel prices are on a general European level and at times cheaper. Still many hotels are overpriced considering the services offered. The state hands out stars to the hotels, and today the difference between a two-star hotel and a three-star hotel may not mean a lot. Apart from the price. A two-star hotel may give you good value, but ask to see the room first as standard differs from place to place. But you do not have to pay more than 35 - 50 euros for a good Romanian hotel room.
The old and stupid system of having one price for westerners and one lower one for Romanians is dead and gone and not legal. There may however be cheaters finding some excuses to charge more from foreigners some way or another. Our advice is to move to another hotel if they present you with this. At least this should be announced on posters in the reception if some rooms are more expensive than others due to items and different "hidden " standards in such rooms. Small pensions and private housing, especially in rural areas are good value in general, and the atmosphere is personal and friendly as well. It may be too personal to many tourists though, and some private places may not offer much privacy. In the summer private people stand roadside with keys in their hands offering "cazare" private rooms in Constanta and all towns at the Black Sea. So even if hotels are full, there is always room somewhere.
